Insights from a Vet Oncologist: Canine Hemangiosarcoma Research
Share
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Dr Jacob Cawley, a Veterinary Oncologist, with Ethos Discovery about his focus on Canine Hemangiosarcoma Research. Our discussion shed light on some remarkable findings around Hemangiosarcoma in canines.
It's alarming to discover that Hemangiosarcoma ranks as the leading cause of death among beloved breeds like Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Labrador Retrievers. Even more concerning is the lack of reliable methods for distinguishing between benign and malignant splenic tumors without resorting to surgery. This ambiguity potentially leads to unnecessary euthanasia for up to half of dogs with bleeding splenic tumors, when surgery could offer a cure if the tumor proves benign.
Dr. Cawley emphasizes the importance of erring on the side of recommending surgery for dogs with bleeding splenic tumors until a quicker diagnostic tool becomes available. He remains optimistic that within the next five years, advancements in diagnostic tools, such as the Ethos PUSH study, will provide invaluable insights. These tools not only prolong the lives of our beloved pets but also empower owners with greater advocacy and education opportunities.
Ethos is also exploring the possibility of using genetic research to breed out this devastating disease from our canine companions. While a cure has yet to be found, promising progress is being made through clinical trials.
If you have a dog that has been diagnosed with cancer, particularly a bleeding splenic tumor, seek out surgical treatment if you can. And if you need more info on clinical studies at a vet clinic near you, you can check out Ethos Discovery or AVMA's list of clinical trials to participate.
All trials are free, and you may be eligible to receive funding towards the cost of care.
Questions about what it's like to have a dog in a clinical trial? You can find all this and more on the Ethos Discovery blog.
